Organic Listings vs paid ListingsSearch Engine Optimization is a growing field of professional services that are design to increase organic search engine visibility.  Organic website listing are free listings that are displayed on search engine "query response" pages.  On most search engines, consumers will see 10 organic (free) listings per page.  Those pages are normally surrounded by paid advertising also referred to as Pay-Per-Click (PPC) ads.

In the graphic shown on the left, the free organic listings are boxed in green and the paid listings (PPC) are boxed in red.  Each search engine will vary on how they display paid and free listings.  Google clearly defines that paid areas, as seen in the example on the left.

The goal of a search engine optimization project will include having your website appear at the top of the free organic listings.  Obviously, only one company can be #1 on any page so the real goal is to get somewhere on Page 1 or Page 2.  If your websites is not found on the first two pages, the response rates will drop significantly.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) employs many techniques to promote web pages so that they are "respected" enough to be included in search engine result pages.  Some of the SEO techniques employed require HTML website programming while others require different skill sets.  A good SEO consultant will outline the exact steps they will be taking to promote your website.  It is important that you understand what is going to be done to ensure that ethical SEO techniques are being used.  "Black hat" or unethical SEO techniques can get your website banned from yahoo and Google.

The end goal of a Search Engine Optimization project is basically Internet Publicity.  This publicity should generate interest in the goods or services you provide and thus generate more traffic to your website.  More visitors will often result in more leads, more sales and the growth of your business.  An SEO consultant in the equivalent of your Internet PR Agency.  Companies who do not have a written SEO plan that is inspected on a regular basis will eventually get run over by their competition.
